The Big Picture: Mike Pelfrey's Season

Overview:

Mike Pelfrey will take the mound for the Mets today against Jonathan Sanchez and the Giants.

So far this season, Pelfrey is 8-8 with a 4.88 ERA.

My Opinion:

So far, Pelfrey has yet to live up to what everyone was hoping and expecting of him. Last year was considered his breakout season, when he went 13-11 with a 3.72 ERA. The problem with Mike seems to be his inconsistency. He often cruises through the first few innings, but has one inning where he gets beaten up on (remind you of anyone else in the starting rotation?). He also seems to get easily frustrated with balls and strikes, which leads to him walking guys or giving up hits.

If Pelfrey can find his consistency, he could a very good number 2 in a starting rotation. He has the stuff to do it, it's just of matter of him executing well. Maybe the number of innings he threw last year (200.2 IP) has affected his arm. Let’s just hope this is one of those rough seasons guys have and that he starts to turn it around today.
